Trisha's top proofreading tips

1. Focus on the text

In order to spot mistakes, it is vital to not have any distractions and potential interruptions.

The focus should be solely on the document.

2. Appalling apostrophes, confusing contractions

Mixing their and they’re, its and it’s, your and you’re. Also using apostrophes to form plurals are a major no-no. Such mistakes hurt the credibility of the text.

3. Perfecting punctuation

Never neglecting the importance of punctuation is vital. Paying attention to words that are unnecessarily capitalised, missing or extra commas, as well as periods that are used incorrectly.

4. Looking out for homonyms

This refers to words that have the same spelling or pronunciation, but have different meanings: accept and except; compliment and compliment.

5. Printing it out on paper

People do read differently on paper than they do on screen, so it is recommended to print out the document and go through it sentence by sentence with the aid of a ruler.

6. Consistency

The words and message are important, but consistent inconsistencies throughout the document are distracting. This also includes looking out for double-spacing throughout the document.
